Hockaday Museum of Art, Kalispell
Capturing Montana’s majestic beauty on canvas has been a driving passion for artists since settlers began heading west. With dramatic landscapes, like those of Glacier National Park, the state has garnered a rich legacy of art and artists.
Preserving and exhibiting Montana’s artistic heritage has become the mission of the Hockaday Museum of Art. The museum maintains a growing permanent collection of Montana art as well as a permanent exhibit of Glacier National Park art and culture. This permanent exhibition features works by significant Glacier Park authors, photographers and painters. Original park collectibles, including vintage maps and hand-tinted photographs capture the nostalgia of the park in another time.
The museum also hosts rotating exhibits featuring nationally renowned and emerging artists. And the Discovery Gallery gives kids an opportunity for hands-on activities that rotate along with the exhibits.
Hockaday Museum occupies the historic structure that was once Kalispell’s Carnegie Library. The building has had major renovations to transform it from library to museum while retaining the its historic authenticity.
Visitors to the museum should check out the Off the Wall Gift Gallery, which features unique pottery, jewelry, cards and artwork by artists of the Flathead Valley, as well as books on the art, history and culture of Montana.
