Back again and bigger than ever before, Bellingham, Washington, invites you to participate in its annual community race; the Bellingham Traverse. Filled with friendly competitive spirit and scheduled for September 19, 2015, this 37-mile relay race tests teams with five different sports, so start training now.
The distance may sound daunting, but don’t get discouraged because teams of all athletic abilities participate each year. From hardcore and serious athletes to friends having fun in costumes, the Bellingham Traverse welcomes all to participate. If you can’t or don’t want to be part of the race, still come out to cheer on the competitors and have a pint at the finish line celebration, hosted by Bay Brewers.
To get to the finish line, each member of the teams will complete one leg of the race. The race includes a 5.5-mile run, 6-mile mountain bike, 18-mile road bike, 3.4-mile trail run and 3.6-mile paddle. It concludes as a team, with a .65-mile sprint to the finish accompanied by wild cheering from the crowd, homemade signs held by loved ones, and exhausted smiles of the competitors.
Not only does the race celebrate athleticism and community, but also the city itself. Every year it draws people from all over, allowing Bellingham to show off its natural beauty and scenic areas. The race winds through Bellingham’s best trails, waterways, and roads, so participants can take in the sites while they compete. For the locals, the race has become a highly anticipated event they use to come together and celebrate their city with both friends and fresh faces.
