Just a short drive from about anywhere in the Pacific Northwest, the small town of Union Gap is perfectly situated to be your homebase for a wine country getaway. Nestled in the “gap” of the Yakima Valley foothills separating the southern half of the Valley from the City of Yakima, it’s the perfect place to stay and explore wineries in every direction. Here is your perfect weekend road trip itinerary!
Where to Taste
Day 1: Union Gap is less than 10 minutes away from award-winning wineries on the outskirts of the town of Wapato. Just down the highway, make your first stop at Owen Roe Winery where they showcase the valley’s unique terroir with small-batch, premium wines crafted from grapes grown in prestigious Yakima Valley vineyards. Here you’ll taste in a classic barrel room, then linger on the patio and lawn or book your private cabana. Just next door, visit Washington’s premier, dedicated sparkling wine house, Treveri Cellars. Linger on the patio for Methodé Champenoise, handmade sparkling wines, delicious bites from the kitchen and sweeping views of the valley. A few minutes down the road, stop at Freehand Cellars for even more stunning mountain and valley views. Their contemporary tasting room, deck and lawn make for a great afternoon sipping wine and sharing perfect wine-pairing bites from the kitchen.
Day 2: Venture just a little farther down the highway to taste at Zillah and Rattlesnake Hills wineries. Start at J. Bell Cellars and Lavender for Sunday brunch on their picturesque patio (reservations highly recommended). Hang out on the expansive lawn for a game of corn hole and wander through the chef’s garden and lavender fields. Next, make a stop at Dineen Cellars for more summer sipping in wide-open spaces, surrounded by lush vineyards under sunny skies.
Don’t leave without stopping at James Beard Award-winning Los Hernandez Tamales for handcrafted tamales with perfect sides and salsas. For casual fare, don’t miss the top 5 classic burger stops in Union Gap. Leave time to gather just-picked produce at the Valley Mall Farmers Market and Fruit City farm stand.
