The Madras Mountain Views Scenic Bikeway is a 29-mile ride through the picturesque landscape of Central Oregon and along the canyon rim of Lake Billy Chinook. Beginning in Madras, the bikeway travels through the towns of Metolius and Culver, as well as through the Cove Palisades State Park and near Round Butte Overlook Park, before looping back to Madras.
It’s called a scenic bikeway for a reason—the view of the Cascade Range across the horizon is breathtaking, and the high-desert landscape of the basin makes it even more spectacular. You might want to stop regularly to take in the views and maybe snap a few photos.
Culver is a great place for a rest stop at around mile 11. Near mile 20, a half-mile detour leads to Round Butte Overlook Park, where visitors can look out over the canyon and watch for birds of prey as they soar past.
For cyclists who ride regularly, the bikeway won’t pose too many challenges, but may be difficult for beginning cyclists. For those interested in integrating this bike ride into a larger adventure, the Cove Palisades State Park provides spaces for RV camping.
