While Oregon wineries may boast a wide assortment of Pinot Noirs, the region also hides a rapidly growing collection of Syrahs.
In contrast to the tannin-sparse and lower-bodied Pinot Noirs, Syrahs posses a high amount tannins with a generally fuller body. The higher tannin levels allow Syrahs to age significantly more reliably than other wines.
In deference to the burgeoning Syrah scene, McMenamins (known for their lodging properties and wineries) has hosted an annual affair commemorating Syrah since 1992.
Located at Edgefield in Troutdale, OR, The Celebration of Syrah lets visitors sample a over 80 Syrahs in a single weekend from around the world. Black Rabbit Executive Chef Kenny Giambalvo will fashion dinners to complement flights of Syrahs.
The festivities go throughout the weekend of April 11th. For more information on The Celebration of Syrah, visit: http://www.mcmenamins.com/622-edgefield-celebration-of-syrah.
