Boat and Beer in Grants Pass, Oregon

Northwesterners are adept at finding new ways to make and drink beer. The Paddled Pub (thepaddledpub.com), based out of the Southern Oregon town of Grants Pass has raised the bar—or, more accurately, launched it onto a river.

The rafting outfitter has paired with Climate City Brewing out of Grants Pass to offer guided trips down the Rogue River on its custom-made floating bar.

Built by SOTAR manufacturing, the world’s premier raft builder, in its facility ten minutes from Grants Pass, the 20-foot Paddled Pub craft features a 14-seat, pub-style bar. The raft brings craft-brew cred to the time-honored idea of the “beer float.”

The Paddled Pub offers two three-hour excursions on the languid late-summer rapids of the Rogue River.

On the afternoon float, enjoy the shade of the raft’s canopy as you cruise the sun-raked Rogue River. Sit back and relax while an expert guide steers the craft. Splashes from the rapids—and sips from your beers—will keep you cool as you enjoy light snacks and lively company.

On the sunset float, watch the sun dip behind the tall pines of the Rogue River Canyon while dining on a light meal. As the summer heat dissipates, throw on a light-weight jacket and raise a toast to the Rogue.

Both floats begin and end at Climate City (climatecitybrewing.com). Pre-float, pick up one of the brewery’s selections in either a can or “crowler”—half-can, half-growler, all-liquid refreshment. After the float, pile back into the van for a return to Climate City. Dry off around the fire pit with upscale pub fare. Or, for upscale dining or a decadent dessert, stroll the historic 19th-century storefronts of downtown Grants Pass to The Twisted Cork (thetwistedcorkgrantspass.com). The bistro and wine bar features 16 regional wines by the glass, in addition to tasting flights and monthly winemaker dinners. Share a tapas plate or the sticky toffee pudding cake to celebrate.

Yes, as the signs stretched across the street say, “It’s the Climate” that attracts visitors to Grants Pass. But the local guides and craft-beer brewers have found a new way to enjoy it.
